1. Describe in detail your internship site, the location, the
general surroundings.
My internship has about 10 offices with people working for my company, The National Basketball Academy and Crescent Digital. It’s in a busy area on Chagrin Blvd. and a lot of traffic comes in or calls in daily for my companies. Most people dress semi-casual or in basketball attire. I usually dress up daily even though I’ve been told my basketball wear is appropriate. I have my own desk in the middle of all the offices next to the men who work for Crescent Digital. Everyone is fun but professional and have welcomed me. I have access to a kitchen where beverages are provided. They have coffee, hot chocolate, water, soda, and a microwave.
2. Describe the role of your supervisor within the organization.
Tom is responsible for helping the directors develop new business opportunities within their markets and also working with foreign organizations to create exchange programs. He is also responsible for managing their relationships with professional agencies to plan player’s camps. He helps provide community appearance opportunities for their players through TNBA camps. Lastly, he is an administrative support staff member meaning he helps answer phones, assist clients with questions and develops program/company presentations, flyers, etc.
3. Describe your role in the organization. What are your duties?
I may be able to expand on areas I think need growth. For example, I can contact my former college who I played basketball for to see about expanding the girls youth program by doing something in the girls market. I can construct my own youth basketball camp and tell TNBA what to pay me for doing so. I’d be in charge of everything… finding the venue (CSU), finding the girls, setting the fees, dates, and anything else I deem fit.
My title is Administrative Assistant and Camp Coach
Duties include: Coaching at Cavaliers summer camps, managing marketing and promotions throughout
summer, working on the administrative side on client relationships and customer service, organizing office and helping produce marketing material/flyers.
4. Describe the organizational culture. What is the expected dress?
The demographics reaches all spectrums and age ranges. They have high school volunteers to college interns with various backgrounds. Some are trying to learn the broadcasting side, while others are on the managerial and psychological side of sports. A couple interns are interested in learning public relations and nonprofit. Dress is pretty casual, some wear jeans daily and some dress up a little more. Some wear basketball attire daily around the office. I have seen no one in a suit even if they are taking meetings. I probably dress up more than most in the office because I wear dresses almost daily. Most of the ladies wear flats or flip flops. I saw one lady in Nike flip flops so I think the attire speaks for how laid back the atmosphere is.
5. How does it feel to be in a new place?
The environment is awesome. I get to express myself, tease with the staff as they do with me and show my personality. I have my own work space, as Tom told me I was the top intern. He also told me on my first day they staff members had expressed a liking of me so I guess everyone took to me quite well. Everyone is on a first name basis, including the president Mike Heines. I wasn’t even aware I was meeting the president until I asked since he was only introduced to me as Mike. The other owner of Crescent Digital, Rick, has nick named my Chee Chee Rodriquez. I enjoy everyone and they seem to enjoy me as well.
6. What did you do this week that was new or interesting?
I learned how to handle and field calls from people needing help with registering, cancellations, and camp information. Some people need confirmations, camp details, Groupon information, and locations. I will later help coach camps on the higher level (college level and up). At this time the office really needed help answering calls so I’m help the secretary Demetria with that. I am also trying to learn the computer system they use since they obtain a multitude of information when fielding questions. The company is international as well and they hold co-ed basketball camps throughout the country. They also work with kids with special needs. The children play sports too and are split up on teams. This was very interesting to me that no matter the child’s circumstances teamwork is still necessary skills to teach them.
7. What are your initial learning expectations?
To learn how to manage the administrative side of a sports company. How to build, develop and execute new programs.
I’d like to learn how to build my clientele when I began searching the market for athletes to market. If I charge everyone a flat fee or by their salaries and my job duties. The dos and don’ts of working in the field. How to handle crises situations. What to do if an athlete has morals I don’t agree with that could be detrimental to their career? How many clients should I try to manage at once and for what duration is sufficient? What market is best for women to branch off in for success in the sports world? What should I avoid in this market? What things can be damaging to my character?
